How to Judiciously Balance Your Personal Life and Thesis Writing

It is not shocking that you still have a few weeks before submitting your thesis writing, but have not written a single word. As soon as that happens, you will cut off all contact with your personal life and devote yourself entirely to your thesis. Although you will have to sacrifice your eating and sleeping habits, you may still reconcile your personal life with the composition of your thesis.

Make schedule revisions:

  • Many PhD students struggle to stick to their plans and deadlines. They are constantly overburdened with obligations and other work, so they are forced to reduce their hours spent engaging in social activities and resting.
  • Your schedule needs to be updated in accordance with your priorities. Treating your timetable as a static schedule will only cause it to fluctuate when your priorities change. Consequently, you should update your schedule each week.

Don’t prioritise social media discussions and emails:

  • A PhD is not easy to obtain; you must conduct extensive research, lab experiments, write a thesis, and develop defence arguments. Your primary focus should be on your PhD project.
  • The main drain on time and resources is digital communication. You are prioritizing other activities if you begin your day by replying to emails and messages on social media platforms. Apparently, this will waste more of your time than you anticipated because other individuals will answer you simultaneously if they are online for chat at that moment.
  • Please consider this deeply. You should prioritize writing your thesis during the day, and then when you have some free time, you should move on to responding to emails.

Subdivide your project:

  • The inability to choose how to begin their projects is one of the major issues PhD academics encounter during a Programme. As the deadline for submission approaches, they become overburdened with lengthy projects that they keep putting off. Therefore, as a result, they start working long hours and sacrifice the quality of their assignments.

For instance, as a freelance manager for a business, you can be tasked with coordinating the staff members’ hangout questions. Decide on a set time each day that you will be accessible to answer their questions, such as from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm. When queries are resolved, this will enable you to entirely concentrate on them, and during downtime you can concentrate on your research.

Prioritize self-care by eating healthy meals, getting adequate sleep each night and scheduling regular physical activity into your daily routine—all of which will improve both mental and physical health as well as productivity levels for working on the thesis.   5. When brief moments of free time arise, make the most of them by reading brief texts that are relevant to your thesis, coming up with ideas, or making notes on areas you want to research further in the future. This manner, even if something comes up unexpectedly during usual “off hours,” like in the evening, some work may still be done without having to instantly return to full-on study mode.
